Spokane is in eastern Washington on the banks of the Spokane River. It is less than 20 miles east of the Idaho border. The Canadian border is about 90 miles from Spokane. Mead School District in Spokane includes four elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.

Public schools in Spokane offer some special programs. Students can enroll in Montessori programs at Balboa Elementary and Jefferson Elementary. The Odyssey program at Libby Center is open to gifted students in the fifth through the eighth grades. Spokane high school students can enroll in vocational training courses or take classes for college credits. The city has a number of private schools.

Universities in Spokane include Gonzaga University, Whitworth University and Washington State University. Eastern Washington University in Cheney is approximately 15 miles from Spokane. Spokane residents can also attend Spokane Community College

Residents of Spokane homes can travel around the city on Spokane Transit Authority buses. People who want to travel out of the area can fly out of Spokane International Airport or take the train from the Spokane Amtrak station.
